Self-Supervision and the Write-Brain: An eight-week writing exploration group for psychotherapists

Facilitated by Judy Gould, PhD, RP and Jason Winkler, RP

Biweekly Tuesday mornings, 9:30–11:00 am ET
September 12–December 19, 2023 ~ on Zoom

Judy and Jason are facilitating a virtual self-supervision writing group for psychotherapists. As alumni faculty members and clinical supervisors for many years at the Toronto Institute for Relational Psychotherapy (TIRP), we are excited to embark on using our write/right brains to creatively explore clinical practice from a relational perspective.

As a group, we will participate in structured writing exercises with prompts (both together and in between meetings), share passages from our writings, and co-create an exploratory process of what arises from these reflections. We hope to establish an engaging, nurturing and supportive atmosphere in which you and your co-participants will expand your emotional awareness of your client work. What we co-create as a group will contribute immensely to everyone’s learning.

This group is for you if you:
*Have a minimum of two years of doing therapy work with clients
*Are eager to engage in creative self-supervision
*Would like a space with other therapists in which to work on writing exercises geared towards exploring your therapeutic work
*Are open to sharing reflective process around what emerges from the writing
*Are feeling inspired to discover and understand more about what transference dynamics are occurring in your client relationships and how things like intuition, imagination and play can help illuminate them

Learning and experiential objectives:

*Expanding on how one reflects on their clinical practice, using the written word and process of writing as a way of gaining further insight
*Learning more about using the self and inner experience as an essential “supervisor”
*Connecting with other ‘write-brain’ explorers in a structured group setting
*Engaging in self-care through creative connection–both with self and with others–in an intimate collegial community

What this group is not:
*This is not a group to learn writing craft: all forms and abilities of writing are welcome!
*This is not a supervision group where we are making suggestions of what actions to take with clients: the ‘action’ is in experimenting with writing prompts
*This is not a group to give direct feedback on others’ writing: the words presented are an invitation into resonance and a right-brain (creative, non-linear) process as a group
